The mayor of Plovdiv, Kostadin Dimitrov, emphasized the significance of the event by switching to Italian. "For the first time, we are hosting such a major sporting event - the Giro d'Italia is passing through Plovdiv. This is a great honor for us, as Plovdiv, having been the European Capital of Culture, is now heading towards becoming the capital of sports."

Dimitrov highlighted that Plovdiv takes pride not only in producing many champions in various sports but also in its cycling traditions, boasting the longest velodrome zone and a modern competition facility, the "KoloDrom." "In Plovdiv, we are all united - culture and sports, organizers and spectators. Now, we have the opportunity to showcase the Ancient Theater and the Roman Stadium, the pedestrian zone, and our hospitality to millions of viewers. Today, Plovdiv is on the world stage. Viva Giro d'Italia," he said in Italian, ending with an apology for the inconvenience caused by the closed streets due to the cycling event.

Following the start of the Giro d'Italia, the city launched its cycling season with a record number of participants - 2400. As a side event, the Foundation group presented a concert at the Ancient Theater, which was fully packed.
