Pini Gershon, a basketball genius and a man of principles, recently returned to Bulgaria, where his roots lie. His grandfather was one of the first rabbis in the country, and he raised and nurtured Gershon. Despite the opportunity to coach superstars, Gershon chose to work with young Bulgarian talent, finding immense satisfaction in the gratitude of children's eyes.
His name needs no introduction. He is a basketball revolutionary, mentor, and motivator. Gershon has led teams to European titles and developed a generation of coaches who excel in Europe and beyond. He has also discovered and refined the talents of numerous players now active in the NBA and EuroLeague.
In 2008-2009, Gershon created a sensation by signing a contract for 1 euro to serve as the selector for Bulgaria's men's national team. He then coached the team to European finals, even defeating Israel. In the past year, he has returned to Bulgaria to lead the "Development" project under the Bulgarian Basketball Federation, focused on nurturing young talent for the national youth and junior teams.
- Mr. Gershon, it has been almost ten months since your official return to Bulgarian basketball. Is this enough time for change?
- For those who are in a hurry and have a purpose, time is always too short. For those who wait and have grown accustomed to receiving things ready-made, it feels like an eternity. We are working hard to catch up, and we have a goal. However, achieving this goal requires time, and no one has ever won the battle with time. We cannot outrun time, but we can fill our lives and work with meaning. Words are not enough. That's why you rarely see me giving interviews. I have always believed in action over words. The real work began in late November, when we started organizing monthly, intensive camps for children from the national teams aged 14, 16, and 18. We are bringing in a large number of children, and I already have a good idea of who will form the core of each age group. However, the selection process continues, and I want to see as many talents as possible. I have full support from the federation.
Pini Gershon is a true legend in Bulgarian basketball, and it's heartwarming to see him return to his roots. But can he turn things around for the sport in Bulgaria? Let's see what the future holds!
