A Night of Pain in the Azteca

The scoreboard tells a brutal story: Mexico 5, Serbia 1. But behind the staggering margin lies a more complex narrative of missed opportunities, defensive lapses, and the heavy burden placed on a youthful squad. Coach Veljko Paunović stood before the press, his expression a mix of pride and profound frustration, attempting to dissect a performance that started with promise and ended in chaos.

"I want to highlight the engagement and sacrifice of the boys," Paunović stated, his voice steady despite the result. "In the first half, we had fantastic energy, controlled the match well, and scored a beautiful goal. That was important because we hadn't scored on away trips for a long time. However, the second goal, conceded just before halftime, which was practically an own goal, made our job much harder."

The statistics were unforgiving. Of the five goals conceded, three were direct gifts to the opposition—careless errors from a team still finding its rhythm. "These are lessons this young team, which is still gelling, must learn," the coach admitted, refusing to hide the severity of the defensive breakdowns.

The Weight of June

Beyond the tactical failures, Paunović pointed to the grueling nature of the June international window. The combined squad, featuring numerous debuts, faced immense pressure both on and off the pitch.

"I am very disappointed with all the circumstances we had in June," he revealed. "The entire burden fell on these boys. On one hand, I am glad they felt the weight football can place on them, but on the other, it hurts to see so much effort wasted due to such results. They gave everything to represent the country, but the scoreline ruins the overall impression."

The path forward is clear, though steep. "There is a lot of work ahead. I am personally very dissatisfied and we must fix many things. It is probably best to leave this June behind and forget it completely. We are turning to September, hoping for more luck," Paunović concluded. The experiment with youth has ended in tears for now, but the rebuild begins immediately.
