The Church's Birthday: A Feast of the Holy Spirit

Pentecost is a great feast because today is the birthday of the Church. The Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia, Daniel, made this declaration to journalists before leading the festive service at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. He referenced the words of Saint Apostle Paul: "Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts."

Pentecost falls on the 50th day after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It marks the fulfillment of Christ's promise to His apostles to wait in Jerusalem, where they would be filled with power from on high. Patriarch Daniel explained that this event fulfills an ancient prophecy where the Lord promised to pour out His Spirit upon all flesh.

From Fearful Fishermen to Bold Apostles

The feast celebrates the eighth Sunday after Easter. According to tradition, after Christ's Ascension on the 40th day, the apostles, along with the Virgin Mary and other disciples, gathered daily in prayer. They met in an upper room, likely the same location as the Last Supper, waiting for the promised Holy Spirit.

Suddenly, a sound like a mighty wind came from heaven, and tongues of fire appeared over those gathered. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they began speaking in other languages. Jews from various nations, present in Jerusalem for the festival, were amazed as each heard the apostles speaking in their own native tongue.

Patriarch Daniel emphasized the transformative power of this event. He noted that the apostles were ordinary, uneducated fishermen who were initially fearful and hiding behind locked doors. The Holy Spirit transformed them into bold theologians and missionaries. "Without the grace of the Holy Spirit, we cannot confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God," the Patriarch stated. He listed the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The Tradition of Walnut Leaves

To symbolize the tongues of fire, walnut leaves are distributed in churches on this day. Patriarch Daniel explained that the walnut husk visually represents the fiery tongues received by the apostles. Every Christian who leaves the church carries a sprig of walnut leaves as a visible sign of what they have received.

"Today is a great and glorious feast. Let us thank God and strive to live worthy lives," Patriarch Daniel wished. The Patriarch urged believers to examine their own hearts for these virtues and to imitate the faith of the holy apostles, whose lives and works continue to affirm the Christian faith today.
