Niklas Edin, the three-time Olympic medalist and captain of the Swedish curling team, has announced his retirement from the international curling circuit. Edin, who celebrated his 40th birthday, plans to remain engaged with the sport in various capacities and continue playing in the Rock League, which recently concluded its first season, according to Reuters.
Edin has had a remarkable career spanning over two decades, despite facing numerous injuries and undergoing several surgeries. He has won a record eight World Championships, eight European titles, and a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. His relentless dedication to the sport paid off, as he continued to achieve titles without looking back.
Edin, a five-time Olympian, set a record for the most games played in Olympic curling earlier this year in Milan-Cortina, surpassing John Shuster with over 51 games played.
"The years went by, the injuries kept coming, but the titles started to come too. The hard work paid off, and from that moment on, there was no looking back," Edin said in a social media post.
