The European media reports that Olimpijakos is currently the favorite to sign the talented Dominican point guard. Valencia is trying to retain Montero with a new contract worth $2 million per season, but it is struggling financially to match the competition.
Hapoel Tel Aviv has offered Montero a staggering $3.5 million per year, while Olimpijakos' offer is somewhat less but reportedly closer to his desires.
Montero has had a phenomenal season in the EuroLeague and is one of the main reasons Valencia will play in the Final Four in Athens from May 22 to 24. During the regular season, he averaged 14.4 points, 4.8 assists, and 3 rebounds per game, with a Player Efficiency Rating (PER) of 17.7.
He particularly shone in the quarterfinal series against Panathinaikos. Despite Valencia losing the first two games at home and facing elimination, the 23-year-old point guard burst onto the scene in Athens, brought the series to a decider, and then helped his team rout Panathinaikos to secure a spot in the final tournament. In the five games against Panathinaikos, Montero averaged 18.6 points, 5.8 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and a PER of 26.8.
