The Comeback King
She walked away in Paris. She left the court with a heavy heart after the quarterfinal loss to Italy on August 6, 2024, marking her 40th birthday with a farewell speech. But destiny, it seems, has a funny way of rewriting the script. Maja Ognjenović is back. The legendary Serbian setter has been called up by coach Zoran Terzić for the upcoming Nations League, signaling a dramatic reversal in her international career.
"Maybe I deserve a nicer ending," Ognjenović told RTS, reflecting on her abrupt exit. "When the dust settled, I realized I deserved a better conclusion. We will see if this year provides it."
Fueled by Love, Not Glory
What drives a veteran in her forties to return to the grueling rigors of elite sport? Not the trophies. Not the money. Ognjenović insists it is pure, unadulterated love for the game. "The material side doesn't push you forward," she stated. "Love, and that hunger to prove yourself, that wins." It is a sentiment that echoes through the halls of sports history, where passion outlasts physique.
A Golden Legacy Meets a New Era
Ognjenović’s resume reads like a hall of fame induction: World Champion in 2018, European Champion in 2011 and 2019, Olympic silver in Rio, and bronze in Tokyo. She admits the game has changed since her prime between 2011 and 2018. Yet, she praises the current squad. "This new generation is fantastic," she noted. "They are already leaders in top European and world clubs, playing at a serious level despite being only 20 or 22." Currently playing for Scandicci, Ognjenović is ready to bridge the gap between her golden era and the future of Serbian volleyball.
