Official: Fermin Undergoes Surgery, Misses 2026 World Cup
Barcelona midfielder Fermin López has successfully undergone surgery for a fifth metatarsal fracture on his right foot, the club announced on Friday. The injury, sustained during a La Liga match against Real Betis, will sideline the player for approximately three months.
The surgical intervention took place at Hospital de Barcelona. Although the club stated that recovery time will depend on the player's progress, sources close to the player predict a recovery period of around three months.
Officially, the operation was performed by Dr. Antoni Dalmau Coll and was overseen by the club’s medical services. The news has significant implications as Fermin was expected to be a crucial part of Luis de la Fuente's squad for the 2026 World Cup. He was already included in the initial list of 55 players sent to FIFA and was expected to feature in the final 26-man squad to be announced on May 25.
Provided his recovery goes as planned, Fermin should be fit for the start of the upcoming season.
Fermin's injury is a massive blow for both Barcelona and Spain. How will they fill this void in the midfield for the World Cup? This is a crisis, and they need a plan B fast!
