Defender Harry Maguire (Manchester United), midfielders Phil Foden (Manchester City) and Cole Palmer (Chelsea) have been omitted from England's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by manager Thomas Tuchel. The squad is set to be officially announced on Friday at Wembley Stadium, according to British media sources cited by Reuters.

Harry Maguire's Reaction

Maguire, 33 years old and with 66 caps for England, had been a key pillar in the country's recent tournament lineups. He missed the last Euro due to an injury and had only recently returned to form. Maguire shared his disappointment on Instagram: "I was confident that I could play a significant role this summer for my country, after the season I had. I am shocked and devastated by this decision. Nothing has given me more joy than wearing that shirt and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer."

Despite a consistent season with Manchester United, where he helped the club climb to third in the Premier League and secure a place in the Champions League, Maguire was left out of the squad. His teammate Luke Shaw was also omitted according to the press.

Phil Foden and Cole Palmer Miss Out, Ivan Toney Included

Foden (49 caps, 4 goals) and Palmer (14 caps, 2 goals) were called up by Tuchel for friendly matches in March against Uruguay and Japan, where an experimental England side failed to impress. After the loss to Japan (0-1), Tuchel noted that Foden's inconsistent play at Manchester City has made his World Cup prospects uncertain.

Foden has started just one Premier League game since then, and Palmer hasn’t been able to replicate his form from the previous season at Chelsea. In contrast, Ivan Toney, the 30-year-old former Brentford striker, has been included. Toney scored 32 goals in 32 matches in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ahli this season.

England in Group L with Croatia, Ghana, and Panama

Tuchel reportedly informed the players who were not selected for the US, Canada, and Mexico tournament on Thursday, which runs from June 11 to July 19. England will face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in Group L.
