The Old Cemetery in Nis has reopened its doors to the public for guided tours, marking the International Museum Day. This tour, titled "Silence that Remembers," offers a unique glimpse into the city’s history and cultural heritage. Renowned Nis residents, including soldiers, artists, and individuals who inspired Stevan Sremac's famous characters, are highlighted during these guided tours.

Researchers and curators discuss the significance of these individuals, particularly their inspiration for Sremac's literary works. The cemetery, rich in history and featuring monuments as old as 250 years, is a crucial site for preserving Nis's cultural legacy.

The Story of Đoka Janković, Inspiration for Maneta

The Old Cemetery also preserves the story of Đoka Janković, a famous Nis silversmith, believed to have inspired Stevan Sremac's character Maneta in "The Zamfir Zone." Janković's great-grandson, Đorđe Janković, noted that Đoka was the first court silversmith to serve King Milan.

"He was a contemporary of Stevan Sremac, Stevan Nikšić, and many other prominent Nis residents. His connections and experiences served as the prototype for the character of Maneta," Đorđe Janković said.

The Legacy of Mirislav Piletić

The tour also highlights the story of Mirislav Piletić, a significant military commander who fought in all the liberation wars of Serbia from 1912 to 1918. He is believed to be the first to enter Pristina with his battalion and participated in battles at Merdara, Kačanik, Cer, and Kolubara.

According to estimates, there are about 7,000 graves in the Old Cemetery, many of which have been restored thanks to the descendants of the families and the work of JKP Mediana.
