Neymar's Injury Raises Concerns Before World Cup

Neymar (34) has been causing ripples in Brazil after he withdrew from a match between Santos and San Lorenzo in Copa Sudamericana, citing a leg injury. Neymar watched the match from the stands with his daughter, as the inflammation in his right leg could prevent him from training for about ten days.

Brazilian Medical Staff Reassess Plans

His absence has led to a reevaluation of the Brazilian team's medical staff's plans. Neymar was initially expected to be fully fit and participate in the training camp starting May 27, and to play in the friendly match against Panama on May 31. However, his injury has forced the medical staff to draft a specific recovery plan for the early stages of the camp.

Coach Cuca of Santos has been cautious about predicting Neymar's return to the field, stating, "Everything related to Neymar is complicated, and we must be very careful. If he is fit to play on Tuesday, he will be available, as his injury is minor."

Ancelotti's Perspective on Neymar's Role

Following Neymar's selection for the Brazilian squad, which sparked nationwide joy, Carlo Ancelotti quickly informed the player that his playing time was not guaranteed. Ancelotti emphasized the importance of focusing on the collective performance of the team rather than relying on a single player.

"Neymar was chosen for his qualities, not because he’s a good substitute. Whether he plays a minute, five minutes, or not at all, or plays all 90 minutes, or takes a penalty—how many minutes? I don’t know. The quality of his playing time is what matters, collectively, on the field. He will play if he deserves it. The training will decide this."
