A Historic Victory in Texas
The New York Knicks have ended a championship drought spanning more than five decades, securing the NBA title on Saturday night. The team defeated the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 94–90 in Game 5 of the best-of-seven Finals series. Although the decisive match took place in Texas, the energy in New York City was palpable as thousands of fans poured into the streets to watch and celebrate this monumental moment.
Some supporters traveled to Texas, gathering at the Frost Center, the home arena of the Spurs, to witness the conclusion firsthand. Elizabeth Medigan, who arrived in San Antonio from New York on Friday evening, described the emotional weight of the occasion.
"I have honestly waited for this most of my life. The last time the Knicks won the title, I was six months old, and I cannot describe how excited I am. It was incredible," Medigan said. "I definitely had doubts. But we did it. Knicks forever."
From Decades of Disappointment to Glory
This season represents a stunning turnaround for the Knicks, who were long considered one of the league’s worst teams after decades of struggle. Their previous Finals appearance was in 1999, also against the Spurs, who defeated them. Their last championship victory dates back to 1973.
Entering Saturday’s game, New York held a 3–1 series lead. Max, a fan who wished to remain anonymous, dismissed concerns about winning away from Madison Square Garden.
"I don't think it matters that they won in Texas. New York is going crazy right now, and there are a million Knicks fans here, so it’s irrelevant," Max stated.
US President Donald Trump congratulated the team and owner Jim Dolan, who had invited him to Game 3 in New York. "What a year it has been, but even more so — what incredible playoff victories we have all witnessed, especially the last four, perhaps the greatest in basketball history," Trump wrote.
Citywide Celebrations and Official Honors
The anticipation before the game was likened to a champagne bottle ready to pop. Jake Minicucci, waiting at a Manhattan sports bar, noted the city’s electric atmosphere. "I have never received so many head nods of greeting — everyone knows we are in this together for the Knicks," he said.
Daniel Brown, 24, described the night as having the potential to be "one of the best in the history of this city." Celebrations lasted into the early hours of Sunday, with crowds flooding Midtown Manhattan around Times Square. Some subway lines were altered, with trains skipping stations due to the sheer volume of people.
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani wrote "HISTORY" on social media. "Through numerous missed opportunities, disappointments, and the hope that every year could be ours, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks," a statement read, as reported by CBS.
A victory parade and ceremony at City Hall are scheduled for Thursday. Mayor Mamdani had previously announced joint viewing parties at Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, and the Wollman Rink. He urged fans to stay safe and responsible, a call following isolated incidents of violence against Spurs fans in New York.
