AC Milan suffered another blow to their Champions League ambitions after succumbing to a 3-2 home defeat to Atalanta in a thrilling Serie A clash. The Bergamaschi took an early lead courtesy of Éderson (7'), before Dzappacosta (29') and Jakob Jääskeläinen (51') doubled their advantage. Milan managed to score two late goals through Stefan Šćepović (88') and substitute Christopher Nkunku (94' - penalty).
Coach Massimiliano Allegri made five changes to the starting lineup following the 0-2 loss to Sassuolo. Defending midfielder Fikayo Tomori was replaced by Conny Deyvriendt. On the left flank, Davide Bartezzaghi returned at the expense of Peris Hestugyan. In midfield, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Samu Castillejo started in place of Yussuf Fofana and Ardon Jagari. With Christian Pulisic out injured, Rafael Leão started again, partnered by Santiago Jiménez, who had not started a match since October.
The hosts began brightly, with Jiménez attempting a long-range shot in the 22nd minute. However, this was swiftly followed by Atalanta taking a 1-0 lead through Éderson's ground shot. Atalanta maintained their momentum and extended their lead to 2-0 when Dzappacosta scored from a deflection off Nikola Krstajić. Atalanta further solidified their position with Jääskeläinen's third goal in the 51st minute.
Milan fought back, reducing the deficit to 2-3 with Šćepović's header from a set piece in the 88th minute. Nkunku then scored a penalty in the 94th minute to cap the dramatic finish. Despite their late rally, Milan were unable to secure a draw, leaving their Champions League hopes increasingly distant.
This is getting ridiculous. Milan's fans deserve better, and it's clear they're not even trying anymore. What's the point of having a team if you're not going to fight for the big stages? It's time for some serious changes, or they'll be stuck in mediocrity for years to come!
