Mercedes and McLaren Introduce Major Upgrades
Mercedes has brought its first major upgrade package of the 2026 Formula 1 season to the Canadian Grand Prix. This package includes a new front wing design that integrates more closely with the footplate, enhancing flow structures and downforce. The team has also revised the floor to improve downforce generation and airflow to the diffuser. Other updates include tweaks to the winglets and lips on all four corners.
Meanwhile, McLaren has launched the second stage of its two-part upgrade plan at the Canadian Grand Prix. The second phase centers around a new front wing design aimed at better flow conditioning and improved aerodynamic load delivery. The team has also re-profiled the engine cover with different cooling exits to optimize airflow towards the rear of the MCL40. Additional changes include a new halo fairing, revised suspension fairing and rear wing endplates, and a tweak to the floor edge wing to increase downforce.
Red Bull and Ferrari Also Bring Updates
Red Bull has brought a minor tweak to the floor edge and a revised second and third front wing flap to help balance the car on circuits like Montreal. The team has also added bespoke cooling options for this race and the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix.
Ferrari, on the other hand, is the only frontrunner not to bring upgrades to Quebec after deploying its new parts in Miami. The team will continue to rely on its existing setup while its competitors bring in new developments.
Impact on the Canadian Grand Prix
The Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal has seen significant attention from teams in terms of updates. Mercedes has dominated the season thus far, but McLaren made inroads on its performance lead in Miami when it introduced the first half of its two-phase upgrade package. Now, with both stages complete, McLaren aims to challenge Mercedes more effectively.
The updates from Mercedes and McLaren, as well as minor tweaks from Red Bull, will likely create a more competitive and exciting race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
