In the face of numerous challenges, including penalties and unfortunate events, Greek sailor Cameron Alexander Maramenidis claimed the gold medal in the Formula Kite World Championship held in Portugal.
The Formula Kite World Championship, part of the Olympic class, continued in Portugal with strong winds reaching up to 20 knots. In the men's category, organizers added six races, leading to intense competition among the 54 athletes representing 26 countries.
Maramenidis started the final races with mixed results, finishing fourth and seventh in the sixth and seventh races, respectively. However, the subsequent races were not as successful. He received 28 penalty points in the eighth race, and in the tenth race, he had a collision with a Chinese athlete, incurring an additional 28 penalty points that could not be reversed.
Adding to his misfortunes, Maramenidis sustained damage to his boat in the eleventh race, preventing him from participating and falling behind in the overall standings. After 11 races, he finished in 17th place with 60 points but secured the gold medal. Going forward, he aims to improve his ranking based on his true capabilities.
In the women's category, after eight races, Argyrou Krotsi is ranked 30th out of 31 boats with 158 points.
This was a comeback for the ages! Maramenidis has shown true grit and determination. But how will he perform in future competitions without these obstacles? Will he be able to maintain his top form?
