Three weeks after sustaining a cheekbone fracture during a Milan vs. Juventus derby (0-0), Luka Modrić (40) has resumed training with his teammates at the Milanello camp. This is the best possible news for fans of both the Croatian national team and AC Milan, ahead of the final round of Serie A, where the club needs to secure a return to the Champions League after a year's hiatus.

The legendary midfielder was present at the Milan match against Genoa last weekend, marking his first appearance in the matchday squad since that fateful April 26th clash with Juventus and the head-on collision with Manuel Locatelli, captain of the "old lady." He celebrated an important victory and will likely compete in the upcoming match against Cagliari on Sunday at 20:45.
Photos shared by Milan show that Modrić's carbon protective mask is asymmetrical, with the right side, the healthy part of his face, being slightly shorter to ensure greater comfort for Luka. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when Joško Gvardiol wore a protective mask, it was somewhat larger.
The typical recovery period for a cheekbone fracture is around two months, indicating that Modrić could be back by July 27th, the day of the final group-stage match against Ghana in Philadelphia. However, he might remove the mask much earlier, wearing it only for the first match against England on July 17th in Dallas, and potentially playing against Panama on July 24th, according to Sportske Novosti.
Modrić is expected to play his 200th match for the national team against Panama on July 24th, providing additional motivation to remove the mask if his recovery and bone healing progress as hoped. Assuming he plays the upcoming matches against Belgium in Rujewici and Slovenia in Varaždin, he will join the national team on May 29th.
