A Legend Takes Flight

The skies above Romania are about to get a whole lot more prestigious. TAROM, the national carrier, has officially sealed a deal to name its brand-new Boeing 737 MAX after Mircea Lucescu, the undisputed king of Romanian football. This isn’t just a plane; it’s a flying monument to a man who turned underdogs into champions across Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine. The protocol was signed on June 3rd, turning metal and wings into a tribute to tactical genius.

Forget the usual corporate branding. The Lucescu family didn’t take a dime. Elena and Răzvan Lucescu handed over the rights completely free of charge. Why? Because some legacies are too big for price tags. Răzvan Lucescu, standing alongside TAROM CEO Bogdan Costaş, called it an honor received with emotion. "My father dedicated his life to football," Răzvan said. "We hope this aircraft travels safely and becomes a symbol of performance."

Values in the Air

This move isn’t random. Mircea Lucescu is the most decorated coach in Romanian history. He dragged Dinamo into the European Cup semifinals when nobody expected it. He built empires in Istanbul and Kyiv. TAROM CEO Bogdan Costaş didn’t mince words about why the name fits. "It’s the strongest tribute we could pay," Costaş declared. "He represents values people doubted could succeed. Through hard work and discipline, he gave confidence to all Romanians. Those are TAROM’s values."

The airline already has a tradition of honoring sporting heroes. Last April, they signed a deal for the "Nadia Comăneci" Boeing 737-800, which carried the Olympic team to Paris. Now, the "Mircea Lucescu" jet joins the fleet this summer. It’s going to fly to major European capitals, carrying passengers who will see a legend’s name on the fuselage. "We want every flight to remind passengers that TAROM, like Romania’s great athletes, can overcome obstacles and make Romanians proud," Costaş added. The plane is ready for takeoff. The legacy is already airborne.
