Petrov’s Breakthrough Season Powers Elversberg Up

2026 has proven to be the standout year for Lucas Petrov, the 25-year-old Bulgarian international. The right winger’s exceptional form played a pivotal role in guiding SV Elversberg to the Bundesliga for the very first time in the club’s history. The side from the town of just 13,000 residents finished second in the 2. Bundesliga, securing direct promotion and establishing themselves as the smallest community with a top-flight representative in Germany.

This achievement comes just one year after Elversberg suffered a dramatic heartbreak in the promotion playoff against Heidenheim. Petrov, whose paternal grandfather is Bulgarian, truly exploded onto the scene during the second half of the 2. Bundesliga campaign. From January until the end of the season, he netted an impressive 11 goals.

A Clear Leader Among Bulgarian Attackers

Petrov’s scoring rate makes him the undeniable standout among the forwards selected by head coach Alexander Dimitrov for the upcoming June friendlies. The national team will face Montenegro at Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv on June 1, followed by a trip to Moldova in Chisinau four days later.

In stark contrast to Petrov’s 11 strikes, the other six players categorized as forwards in the national squad have managed only five goals combined in 2026. Petrov recently revealed he is using the current training camp to improve his Bulgarian language skills, a personal touch that adds to his growing popularity at home.

The Rest of the Forward Line

Marin Petrov, who won the league title with Levski Sofia before moving to Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawun this winter, has two goals to his name so far this year. However, his output is skewed by his recent deployment as a left-back by Brazilian coach Pericles Chamusca.

Tonislav Jordanov of Kisvarda in Hungary, Martin Mincev of Polish side Krakowia, and Zdravko Dimitrov have each scored once. Dimitrov found the net for Bodrum in Turkey in late January before transferring to second-tier Amed, where he has yet to score.

The other two forwards called up, Vladimir Nikolov and Georgi Rusev, have struggled for goals. Nikolov moved from Slavia to Korona Kielce last summer but has failed to score in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Rusev, who returned from Swiss side Sion to play for CSKA 1948 a year ago, scored only once last season and has nothing in 2026.

Petrov featured in all 34 of Elversberg’s 2. Bundesliga matches, recording 13 goals and 8 assists for the campaign. He also has eight Bundesliga appearances for Augsburg. Given his current trajectory, it is entirely possible the Bulgarian international will compete in the German top flight with a different club this coming season.
