A French Opening, A Bulgarian Statement
The clay courts of Paris did not slow down the Bulgarian storm known as Dimitar Kisimov. The 18-year-old prospect, currently ranking as the ninth-best junior player in the world, delivered a commanding performance to secure his spot in the second round of the Roland Garros junior singles draw. His opponent, French qualifier Aaron Gabe, found himself outclassed in a match that lasted just 83 minutes, falling with a decisive scoreline of 7-5, 6-1.
Dominance on the Red Dirt
Kisimov, seeded ninth for the tournament, controlled the narrative from the opening serve. He built a comfortable 5-3 lead in the first set, only to allow Gabe a brief rally back to 5-5. But any hope of an upset evaporated as Kisimov closed out the set with two hard-fought games, taking the opening frame 7-5. The second set was a different story entirely. The Bulgarian star took complete control, racing to a 3-0 lead and never looking back. Another three-game surge sealed the deal, ending the contest 6-1 and sending a clear message to the rest of the junior field.
Next Up: A Familiar Face
The road to the junior French Open title continues with a fascinating second-round matchup. Kisimov will face Connor Duig, his doubles partner from South Africa. The duo is no stranger to Grand Slam glory, having already captured the junior doubles title at the Australian Open earlier this season. Their partnership extends to these Parisian courts as well, where they will team up again in the doubles competition. In their first doubles match, Kisimov and Duig will take on the French pairing of Damien Clerc and Mathys Martin. With momentum on their side and chemistry proven at the highest level, the Bulgarian-South African alliance looks poised for another deep run in the French capital.
