The Kingdom of Serbia became the first European country to legalize dueling on January 10, 1899, with the adoption of the Military Disciplinary Court Law. This unique case in contemporary Europe saw Serbia become the only state to recognize dueling as a legally regulated method for defending one's honor. In an era where insult, word, and reputation carried more weight than mere personal conflict, the state sought to bring order to a practice already prevalent among officers and higher social strata. Instead of secret settlements and public duels, dueling was placed under strict rules, with clearly defined procedures and responsibility for participants.

Duels were deeply intertwined with military honor, which was considered the cornerstone of military discipline and personal dignity in Serbia at the time. In a society still imbued with the spirit of liberation wars and knightly tradition, an insult could not be easily overlooked. Therefore, the state aimed to prevent blood feuds and self-vendettas by introducing rules designed to limit violence and provide a form of "fair play."

Duels could not be conducted on personal initiative. Every request had to be approved by the Military-Honorary Court, which assessed whether the insult was sufficiently serious and if conditions for a duel were met. The rules precisely defined the type of weapon, usually swords or pistols, the distance between opponents, the number of shots or movements, as well as the mandatory presence of seconds and doctors. This way, dueling was shifted from the realm of personal vendetta into a strictly controlled event.

Notably, participants, if a duel was conducted in accordance with all regulations, were exempt from criminal liability even in cases of severe injury or death of the opponent. This effectively acknowledged that honor was a value for which one could risk their life.

Today, such practices seem almost unimaginable, but they speak to a time when reputation, word, and military honor had a distinct character and weight. The story of legalized duels in the Kingdom of Serbia remains a unique historical example of the intersection of law, tradition, and the chivalrous notion of dignity.
