Despite having never raced on the road competitively, American mountain bike star Kate Courtney won a stage in the Tour de Feminin in the Czech Republic just four days into her road racing career. This victory marks the first European road race win by an American woman in 2026.
“First UCI road race, and it’s already a stage win for Kate Courtney at the Tour de Féminin,” USA Cycling posted after the victory.
Courtney, who has an illustrious career in mountain biking, including winning the elite cross-country world title in 2018 and the overall World Cup crown in 2019, admitted that the transition to the road peloton had been humbling but also necessary for growth.
“The first days in the European peloton were humbling to say the least. But growth happens outside your comfort zone, and sometimes the best way to learn how to swim is to jump right into the deep end,” she wrote.
In addition to her own success, teammate Katherine Sarkisov also achieved top-5 finishes in the final two stages, leading the team with a ninth-place overall finish, while Courtney was 13th.
From Mountain Biking to European Road Racing in Four Days
The transition between mountain biking and road racing is often a lengthy process. While road cyclists moving to mountain biking have achieved quick success, the reverse can be slower as mountain bikers adapt to the positioning, speed, and longer distances of road racing.
With her recent victory, however, Courtney is already adding skinny tires to her quiver and exploring road racing to push her limits and become a more complete rider. “I’m productively intimidated by just how much I have to learn. But I couldn’t be more excited to keep taking on new challenges,” she wrote.
Could this be the first step in perhaps following multi-disciplinary superstars like Pauline Ferrand-Prévot? Stay tuned.
Kate Courtney's road racing debut is mind-blowing! But can she keep this up and truly bridge the gap between mountain biking and road racing? Her skills are impressive, but the road is a whole new ballgame. Let's see how she handles the pressure!
