Norwegian tennis star Kasper Rüud continued his impressive run at the Geneva Open, making a standout service presentation to reach the semifinals. The 25-year-old, who holds a record three titles from the Swiss ATP 250 tournament, defeated Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-3, securing a place in the semifinals.
Rüud lost only three out of 28 points on his first serve and completed the victory in 72 minutes.
Record Tied with Tennis Legend
With his win in the quarterfinals over Australian Popyrin, Rüud improved his record to 16-1 in Geneva and tied with former world No. 1 Mats Wilander for the second most wins in the tournament's history. In his quest for a record fourth title in Southern Switzerland, Rüud will face Mariano Navone, who beat Jaume Munar (Spain) 6-2, 6-2 for his 50th ATP-level victory.
Semifinalists Secure Their Places
Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan, who had only three clay court wins prior to this week, also advanced to the semifinals after defeating Arthur Rinderknech (France) 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a reversal. Navone, who won his first Tour title in Bucharest last month, is now in his fifth semifinal, all on clay courts.
Bublik's next opponent will be American Learner Tiern, who seeks his second final of the year after reaching one in Hong Kong. The two recently met in Rome about 10 days ago, where Tiern won in three sets – 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Tiern also eliminated compatriot Alex Michelsson with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
