Jose Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid After 13 Years

Portuguese football coach Jose Mourinho has agreed to return to Real Madrid as the team's head coach 13 years after his departure from Santiago Bernabeu, according to international press reports.

According to the Spanish newspaper AS, Mourinho met with Benfica president Rui Costa last Monday and informed him that he would not be renewing his contract. Mourinho is expected to be officially announced at Real Madrid on May 24, after the club's election for a new president concludes.

Mourinho, 63, is set to replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who himself took over from Xabi Alonso in January as Real Madrid secured second place in La Liga, 11 points behind league leaders Barcelona.

The Portuguese spent three years at Santiago Bernabeu (2010-2013), during which time he won one league title, a cup, and a national supercup. He was also the first coach to reach 100 points with Real Madrid in a single season.

Mourinho's imminent return follows weeks of speculation that he was Florentino Perez's preferred choice to lead the club forward, aiming to halt Barcelona's dominance, which has seen them win two consecutive league titles and three of the last four, and to return to the forefront of the Champions League, where Real Madrid was knocked out by Bayern Munich this season.

Perez has been under increasing pressure over the past two trophy-less seasons, facing protests during a recent victory over Oviedo (2-0) at Bernabeu.
