After guiding Al-Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title, Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus has confirmed his departure from the club. Amidst growing speculation that Pep Guardiola might take over, Jesus told Sport TV that Guardiola should be proud to replace him. He also highlighted the significant role Cristiano Ronaldo played in his move to Saudi Arabia.
"Guardiola Should Be Proud to Replace Me"
Jesus confirmed his departure shortly after the club's victory in the Saudi Pro League. The speculation about Guardiola's potential move to Saudi Arabia has been increasing. When asked if he would be proud if Guardiola replaced him, Jesus dismissed the idea and emphasized the opposite sentiment.
"Proud that Guardiola is replacing me? No... Why? He should be proud to come to my place, not the other way around," Jesus stated. He explained that despite winning the title, he did not wish to extend his contract.
"When I accepted this challenge, invited by Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Semedo, I knew it would be the toughest task of my career. To win the championship, we had to be significantly better than our competitors. As I told Cris, 'I will help you become a champion, and then I will move on with my own journey."
Ronaldo's Role in the Move
Jesus revealed that Ronaldo played a crucial role in his decision to join Al-Nassr. He insisted on a one-year contract due to the physical and mental demands of coaching in Saudi Arabia.
"When I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo, they initially offered me a two-year contract, but I wanted only a one-year deal. I always do this in clubs. It was a very tough championship; you have to make decisions, often risking your own health, and it is very exhausting. It was a wonderful year, but now I need to find joy elsewhere," Jesus explained.
"He has an enormous passion for football. I told him, 'I am accepting this project only for you; otherwise, I wouldn't come. We will win the title, and you will leave here as a champion.' That's what happened," he added.
Jesus and Guardiola's Future
Jesus is expected to make a decision about his next move in the coming weeks, with serious interest reportedly coming from Turkey, including Fenerbahçe, whom he led from 2022 to 2023. Meanwhile, the speculation about Guardiola's future, who is expected to leave Manchester City at the end of the season, is likely to continue.
