A Historic First for Sport Climbing

Janja Garnbret has once again rewritten the limits of human performance. The Slovenian climbing icon made history on June 6, 2026, by becoming the first woman to ascend Bibliographie, a notorious sport climbing route rated at an elite 9b+ grade. Located in the craggy limestone of France, the route had previously seen only five successful male ascents, cementing its reputation as one of the hardest climbs on Earth. For Garnbret, this ascent marks a profound shift from her dominant indoor career to the unforgiving unpredictability of outdoor bouldering and sport climbing.

The Psychology of Patience

Garnbret is no stranger to victory, boasting two Olympic gold medals and 49 World Cup titles. However, the Bibliographie demanded a different mindset. Known for her perfectionism and relentless drive, the 27-year-old admitted she had to unlearn her usual "want it now" approach. "This route required me to be a different climber," she explained. "I'm a very impatient person... But this experience taught me that patience really is the most important thing."

Her previous attempt on the route ended in failure, but she returned with renewed focus. The successful send was almost accidental; she initially planned the session as a mere warm-up. "My head was super calm," she recalled. "I was honestly just vibing on the wall. I had zero thoughts."

Conquering the Elements

The physical challenge of Bibliographie is immense. Standing 35 meters high with over 80 moves, the route features two brutal crux sections. Complicating matters, the climb sits at an elevation above 2,000 meters, where weather conditions are volatile. Garnbret battled shifting winds and unpredictable temperatures, factors that do not exist in the controlled environment of competition walls. "Sometimes it's very windy, sometimes no wind at all," she noted, highlighting the mental fortitude required to manage external variables. With this milestone secured, Garnbret is already looking for the next project that ignites her competitive fire.
