The waters in Šumadija are churning. The Radnički Kragujevac water polo club has landed another heavyweight, cementing their status as a formidable force in the Balkan aquatic arena. After securing Serbian international Nikola Lukić, the club has now confirmed the signing of Croatian national team goalkeeper Ivan Marcelić. At 32, the experienced shot-stopper arrives from Mladost Zagreb, marking his first venture outside Croatia in a career defined by resilience and precision.
A Decision Without Doubt
Marcelić faced no hesitation when the call came. Having clashed with Kragujevac numerous times throughout his career, he understands the club's pedigree intimately. "When Radnički called, I didn't hesitate for a second," Marcelić stated. "I know their reputation in Serbia and European water polo. I know how much the city lives for this sport."
Insider knowledge sealed the deal. Former Croatian teammate Josip Vrlić, who spent two stints with Radnički, provided glowing reports on the club's culture and the atmosphere in Kragujevac. "I heard only the best things," Marcelić explained. "The sports project and the chance to fight for trophies on all fronts attracted me the most."
Targeting European Glory
The ambition is clear: challenge the continent's elite. Marcelić views the squad as a perfectly assembled unit of seasoned professionals. "They clicked in the second half of the season and played fantastic water polo," he noted. "My job is to integrate quickly, bring my experience, and help the team improve."
While favorites domestically, Marcelić believes the squad possesses the quality for serious European results. "We can compete on equal terms with the best teams on the continent and attack the top of European water polo," he declared. A gold medalist at the 2017 World Championships with Croatia, Marcelić brings proven pedigree. Radnički is expected to announce further reinforcements soon.
