Ioan Ovidiu Sabău (58), last seen coaching Universitatea Cluj until his departure in October last year, is set to make a comeback to the Romanian Superliga. Sabău, who played as a midfielder for the Romanian national team, has been a subject of interest for Farul Constanța, the 2017 and 2023 league champions. Farul has been searching for a new coach since their current manager, Flavius Stoican, is expected to leave after the season's conclusion.

Farul's New Direction

Flavius Stoican's tenure with Farul is coming to an end, regardless of the team's performance in the playoff against Chindia Târgoviște. The first leg of this playoff match will be held in Târgoviște on May 23 at 17:30, with the return match at Ovidiu on May 31 at 20:30. Stoican's fate was sealed by the team's home defeat to Metaloglobus, 0-1, in the penultimate match of the season, which exacerbated pre-existing dissatisfaction with the team's performance.

Sabău's Previous Interest

Ioan Ovidiu Sabău was previously in the running for the Farul Constanța position in April, shortly before Ianis Zicu's departure. At that time, Sabău requested a monthly salary budget of 30,000 euros, including his own and his staff's remuneration. Farul's management found this sum excessive, and Sabău was hesitant to take over a team mid-season. Since then, Sabău has lowered his demands, and Farul officials are no longer willing to experience the current season's emotional rollercoaster.

In the event that Farul Constanța is relegated to the second league after the playoff against Chindia Târgoviște, Nicolae Dică is the potential candidate for the coaching role.
