If you thought you needed to fly across the world and spend thousands of euros for turquoise waters, fine sand, and a tropical setting – think again. Just a hundred kilometers from Belgrade, nestled in the Fruška Gora hills, lies a place that justly bears the title of homegrown exotica.
The place in question is Bešenovo Lake (also known as Beli kamen), a spot that leaves first-time visitors breathless year after year.
How Did This Fruška Gora Paradise Form?
Interestingly, this lake is a result of human activity and natural processes in perfect symbiosis. Once, a quarry existed here from which raw materials for a cement factory were extracted. When exploitation was halted in the 1990s, nature took over.
Subterranean water sources began to fill the quarry, and due to the specific limestone composition of the ground and its significant depth (exceeding 50 meters in some places), the water acquired an incredible turquoise, crystal-clear hue that one typically sees only in postcards of the Caribbean or Zanzibar.
What Awaits You and Why It's Perfect for a Day Out?
Bešenovo offers a complete visual reset from the city, making it ideal for a day or weekend escape.
- Spectacular Scenery: A combination of white stone, turquoise water, and Fruška Gora greenery makes this place a paradise for photography (your Instagram feed will "explode").
- Healing Mud: Many visitors believe the mud around the lake is healing due to its high mineral content, so don't be surprised if you see people completely coated in it.
- Pine Scent: Unlike urban beaches, here you are surrounded by fresh Fruška Gora air.
Tips Before You Go
Given that this is a natural lake not officially designated as a public swimming pool, you need to be prepared for a few things:
- No Shade: Bring sun protection, hats, and sunscreen, as the beach is largely rocky and exposed to the sun.
- Water Footwear: Due to the sharp rocks in parts of the water entry, beach sandals are a great idea.
- Logistics: There are a few improvised cafes on the lake during the season, but it's best to bring your own water, refreshments, and food.
