Pyrotechnics Bring the Final to a Grinding Halt
The drama at the ARKUS League final reached a boiling point that no one saw coming. What was supposed to be a coronation turned into chaos when massive flares were thrown onto the court by spectators. The situation escalated so quickly that both the players and the referees were forced to flee the playing surface during the first half. Safety, it seems, took precedence over sport, but the fallout is far from over.
The Vojvodina squad refused to return to the court until the dangerous section of the stands was cleared. Officials demanded the game continue, but the Novi Sad club held its ground. With negotiations failing, referee Boričić blew the final whistle after just 15 minutes. The match was initially recorded as a 10-0 forfeit victory for Partizan, allowing the black-and-whites to celebrate with the championship jerseys on the spot. But that celebration was short-lived.
A Rematch in an Empty Arena
The league administration, led by director Vladimir Knežić, has overturned the initial result. The decision? A complete replay of the final. The new match is set for Monday at the Slana Bar sports hall in Belgrade. Crucially, the game will be played behind closed doors, with no spectators allowed inside. Partizan itself had actually requested a replay, insisting that the title should be decided on the court, not by administrative ruling.
The human cost of the incident remains a concern. Vojvodina reported that player Fran Mileta suffered from elevated blood pressure, tinnitus, and coordination issues following the pyrotechnic attack, though no severe injuries were recorded. Whether Vojvodina will accept these sterile conditions remains the biggest question mark. An official statement from the ARKUS League is expected tonight, but one thing is certain: the Serbian handball championship is far from decided.
fenerbahce were miles better this season tbh but honestly didn't see that coming with the pyro lol... Djokovic just different class rn... not convinced they can keep this up but we'll see
