Greek football clubs are once again on the verge of a significant European presence, with Olympiacos and OFI set to face difficult playoff challenges in UEFA competitions. The new European season has reignited hopes for Greek football, with AEK winning the league and OFI claiming the Cup, leading to increased expectations and focus on the League Phases of UEFA competitions.
The scenario of five Greek teams competing in Europe from the fall onward remains open and echoes the strong European season of 2007/08 when Olympiacos was in the Champions League groups and AEK, Panathinaikos, Aris, Panionios, and AEK participated in the UEFA Cup groups, marking one of the most successful European years for the country.
According to "Football Meets Data" projections, most Greek teams have serious chances of reaching the League Phase of European competitions. AEK is the team with the highest likelihood of reaching the Champions League League Phase, needing just one qualifying round. Panathinaikos is expected to advance through three rounds to the League Phase of the Conference League, while PAOK is projected to follow a similar path to the Europa League's League Phase.
The toughest challenges seem to await Olympiacos and OFI
The "red-whites" are forecasted to reach the playoffs of the Champions League, where the level significantly increases. The prediction is that they will be eliminated at that point and will eventually continue in the Europa League's League Phase.
A similar picture emerges for OFI. The Cretans appear capable of advancing to the playoffs of the Europa League but without completing the breakthrough. Nevertheless, progressing to the Conference League's League Phase would be a significant achievement for the Heraklion team.
The most important aspect for Greek football is that the overall picture appears much more competitive compared to previous years. If the projections come true, Greece will regain a strong presence in UEFA competitions and valuable rankings for the UEFA coefficient.
