The Greek Ministry of Interior has allocated over €350,000 to enhance the safety of Kefalonia's beaches for the upcoming 2026 summer tourism season. The funding aims to strengthen lifeguard coverage and improve safety infrastructure across the island's internationally recognized beaches, which attract thousands of visitors each year.
The financial support will be distributed among the three municipalities of Kefalonia: Argostoli Municipality will receive €256,291.38, Sami Municipality will receive €60,051.27, and Lixouri Municipality will receive €33,771.12. This distribution ensures coordinated preparation for the peak tourist period.
Officials emphasize the importance of this investment for ensuring the smooth operation of busy coastal areas, which see significant domestic and international tourist traffic during the summer months. The presence of trained lifeguards, adequate safety equipment, and upgraded infrastructure is deemed a fundamental requirement for maintaining the quality and safety of the island’s tourism product.
Local MP Panagis Kappatos welcomed the decision, noting that the funding represents a significant boost for public safety and tourism readiness. He highlighted that the initiative ensures better protection of human life while supporting the preparedness of local authorities ahead of the summer season. Kappatos also stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of safety and service for both residents and visitors, emphasizing continued efforts to support local infrastructure and strengthen the capacity of municipal authorities across the Ionian Islands.
