A Golden Moment in Botevgrad
The atmosphere crackled with anticipation at Botevgrad Arena on May 26, 2026. Before the tip-off of the Sesame National Basketball League final opener between Balkan and Lokomotiv Plovdiv, the spotlight shifted from the hardwood to a man who defined an era. Georgi Glushkov, President of the Bulgarian Basketball Federation (BFB), presented a golden ball to the legendary Petko Marinov. It was a fitting tribute to a career that reshaped Bulgarian basketball.
From Burgas to the Pinnacle
Born in Burgas on June 11, 1949, Marinov began his journey with local club Botev. He quickly ascended, donning the jerseys of Akademik Sofia and CSKA. A Coaching Dynasty
Marinov’s influence did not fade with retirement. He transitioned into one of Bulgaria’s most successful coaches. At the helm of CSKA, he delivered three championships and four cups. He also led Kompakt Dimitrovgrad to the top of the league. His success continued with the men’s team of Lukoil Akademik, winning a title, two national cups, and triumphing in the FIBA Europe South Conference tournament. Later, returning to his roots, he took charge of Neftokhimik’s women’s team in Burgas, dominating with five championships and three cups. He even served as head coach of the Bulgarian men’s national team, leaving an indelible mark on every level of the sport.
