Athens museums will provide free admission, guided tours, concerts, and special cultural events on May 18, 2026, for International Museum Day. Established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), International Museum Day celebrates the role of museums in preserving cultural heritage, promoting education, and fostering dialogue between cultures and generations.

This year’s theme emphasizes museums as open and inclusive spaces that encourage communication, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence in an increasingly divided world. The Greek branch of ICOM has honored the Archaeological Museum of Olympia and the Museum of the History of the Ancient Olympic Games for 2026.

In Athens, several museums will host a variety of free events. The Acropolis Museum will offer free entry and piano recitals overlooking the Hall of Archaic Statues as part of the Piano City Athens Festival. The National Gallery will host a tactile tour for visually impaired visitors, allowing them to experience selected artworks through touch and audio descriptions. The National Archaeological Museum will provide thematic tours exploring Cycladic civilization and the relationship between Minoan and Mycenaean cultures.

The Benaki Museum will celebrate with free admission to its Toy Museum, children’s activities, and special broadcasts. The Byzantine and Christian Museum will host intergenerational programs for grandparents and grandchildren. Other participating institutions include the Epigraphic Museum, the Bank of Greece Museum, and the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation, all offering free events and themed exhibitions.

Many activities require advance reservations due to limited capacity, while museum entry across Greece will remain free on May 18 as part of the global celebration.
