"I was on the train, just chilling. Suddenly, someone came over my shoulder, and stabbed me."
Jonathan Gjoshe, a 23-year-old footballer for Scunthorpe United, recounts the harrowing events of 1 November 2022, when he was among 11 passengers seriously injured in a knife attack on a train traveling through Cambridgeshire. Gjoshe had been on his way back to London from Doncaster, just weeks into his first season with Scunthorpe United.
During the attack, Gjoshe was stabbed seven times in his bicep, shoulder, and arm. "I got stabbed on the shoulder first," he tells BBC Sport. "I remember jumping over the table, jumping over the chairs, running down the corridor, and screaming, 'there's a guy with a knife, run, run, run.'"
The train made an emergency stop at Huntingdon, where armed police met it. Gjoshe managed to get himself out to the station car park and was rushed to the hospital. He was given first aid by a fellow passenger before surgery revealed the extent of his injuries.
Despite the severity of his wounds, Gjoshe has made a remarkable recovery. He returned to full training in March after several months of rehab. "It was an amazing feeling," he says. However, he has not been on a train since the attack, stating, "I just can't trust anything now."
Gjoshe's story is a testament to his resilience and determination to continue his football career despite the traumatic experience.
