Federico Gatti's journey from a construction worker to a key defender for Juventus and the Italian national team is as inspiring as it is unlikely. Serbian star Dusan Vlahović, who plays alongside Gatti, described his teammate's story as a perfect example for young players who dream of playing in the biggest stadiums.
Only a few years ago, Gatti himself could hardly imagine such a successful career. Born in Rivoli, he started his career in Torino, where he was initially seen as someone destined to work in construction. But Gatti never gave up, working as a bricklayer, carpenter, and even selling goods at markets during the day, while playing football on muddy fields in his hometown at night.
Five years ago, Gatti was playing in the fifth tier for Verbania. Two years later, he was called up to Pro Patria in Serie C, a stepping stone for further progression. His performances in Serie C led to a move to Frosinone for €150,000, and his excellent play there caught the eye of Juventus, who signed him for €5.5 million in the summer of 2022.
Juventus loaned Gatti back to Frosinone for the rest of the season before bringing him back to Torino. Interestingly, Gatti received his call-up to the Italian national team before making his debut for Juventus, and he made his debut for the "Azzurri" against England in Wolverhampton.
In his first half-season with Juventus, Gatti received occasional opportunities, but he has firmly established himself as an indispensable part of the defense in the second half, cementing his place as a key player for the most decorated Italian club.
Gatti's father, Ludovico, revealed that his son draws inspiration from Novak Djokovic, the world's best tennis player and a symbol of a born winner. Djokovic's relentless pursuit of success, regardless of age and achievements, has always fascinated Federico.
"He admires Djokovic's thirst for victory. He is his inspiration," said Gatti's father.
Federico Gatti's story proves that with hard work and dedication, dreams can come true! But can you imagine a world where every kid has a chance to follow their passion without having to work day jobs just to make ends meet? Let's keep pushing for more opportunities in sports for all!
