England’s national team is facing a major shake-up ahead of the World Cup, with key players from Manchester City and Chelsea missing the squad. The final 26-man roster, announced by coach Thomas Tuchel, includes several surprising omissions and additions.

Major Stars Missing the Cut

The English media have reported that several of the Premier League’s biggest stars will not be traveling to the United States, Canada, and Mexico for the World Cup. According to The Athletic, players such as Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are among those who have been left out of the squad. On Thursday, Manchester United’s Harry Maguire confirmed he was not on the list and was upset by the decision.

Phil Foden, a key player for Manchester City, had a tough season with limited minutes under Pep Guardiola and apparently failed to impress Tuchel during the last training camp. Foden played poorly in England’s 1-0 loss to Japan, where he had the fewest touches of the ball among all starters. Cole Palmer of Chelsea faced a similar fate due to his disappointing season and performance against Japan.

Surprising Additions

Tuchel’s decisions have opened the door for other players to join the team. According to media reports, Kobbie Mainoo, a young winger from Manchester United who performed well under Michael Carrick, has secured his spot on the national team. Other players who are expected to feature on the roster include Noni Madueke from Arsenal, Tino Livramento from Newcastle, and striker Ivan Toney.

Tuchel appears to be building a team with clearly defined roles, favoring players who fit into his system rather than those with the biggest names. England will face Croatia in their opening match of the World Cup on June 17.
