A Legend Exits the Court
The lights dim on a titan of Greek volleyball. Eleni Zetu has passed away at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy that shook the foundations of the sport. This was not just a player; this was a force of nature on the court, a strategic mind in the coaching box, and a scholar who shaped the future of the game. The entire athletic community in Greece stands in solemn tribute.
Zetu’s journey began in the raw talent of Thessaloniki. She started in athletics, mastering the long jump and shot put with Iraklis Thessaloniki FC, before pivoting to basketball and finally finding her true destiny in volleyball. At just 16, she donned the yellow and black of Aris Thessaloniki. For over a decade, she wore the captain’s armband, leading the charge with ferocity and grace. She was the heartbeat of Aris during its golden era.
International Glory and Academic Legacy
Her impact went far beyond club walls. Zetu debuted for the Greece women's national volleyball team in 1973, becoming a cornerstone until 1977. She returned in 1982, playing until 1984, proving her longevity and enduring skill. In 1977, she was crowned the best athlete of the year, a title that cemented her status as an icon.
But Zetu’s work never stopped. She transitioned into coaching, molding young talents in Thessaloniki and leading national youth squads. She brought her expertise to the TEFAA (School of Physical Education and Sport), teaching the next generation of athletes and coaches. Her book on volleyball psychology remains a testament to her intellectual depth. She leaves behind two children, including her daughter Ferencika Moundaki, who also embraced the sport. Eleni Zetu is gone, but her echo remains on every court in Greece.
