DR Congo Postpones Training Camp Due to Ebola Outbreak
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) national football team is facing challenges as it prepares for the World Cup, following the outbreak of Ebola in the country. FIFA is closely monitoring the situation and working with the governments of the host countries to ensure the safety of all participants.
The planned training camp in the capital, Kinshasa, has been canceled. Instead, the team’s preparation program will continue in Europe and Houston, Texas, as originally planned.
“The match in Kinshasa has been canceled due to health restrictions,” said a spokesperson for DR Congo. The team is expected to be in Houston in June, with their first group match against Portugal taking place on June 17. Other matches against Colombia and Uzbekistan are scheduled for June 23 and June 27, respectively.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also issued a 30-day travel restriction for those who have recently visited areas affected by the Ebola outbreak, including DR Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan.
Satish Pillai, the CDC incident manager, stated on Tuesday that they are working actively with FIFA to ensure safe travel and the security of both travelers and the American public throughout the tournament period.
FIFA is in close communication with the DR Congo Football Federation to ensure that the team is fully informed about all medical and safety guidelines.
This is a huge setback for DR Congo, but player safety is paramount. I hope they can overcome this and still make it to the World Cup! How can we ensure the safety of athletes in global competitions?
