Novak Djokovic secured his place in the second round of Roland Garros after a grueling four-set victory over French qualifier Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The defending champion, hunting his 25th Grand Slam title, had to dig deep against the towering home favorite, winning 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4.

A tense start in Paris

The match began as a battle of attrition. Perricard, standing at 2.04 meters and ranked 83rd in the world, utilized his massive serve to trouble Djokovic from the outset. Fuels by the raucous Parisian crowd, the Frenchman played with fearless aggression. At 5-5 in the opening set, Perricard broke Djokovic's serve and held on to take the first set 7-5, sending a shockwave through the stadium.

The second set proved even more intense. Djokovic ramped up the pressure, but Perricard refused to fold. The Serbian legend missed a staggering six break points, including two early chances and a marathon game where he led 40-15. Perricard saved three set points at 5-6, but Djokovic finally converted the fourth to level the match at one set apiece.

Djokovic takes control

With momentum shifting, Djokovic stormed out of the gates in the third set. He broke Perricard early and never looked back, dominating the middle set 6-1. The Frenchman appeared physically drained, struggling to find his rhythm against Djokovic's relentless baseline pressure.

The fourth set started with drama. Djokovic broke immediately, but Perricard responded by taking back his serve. The Frenchman even requested a brief medical timeout when leading 2-1. However, Djokovic reasserted his dominance at 3-3, securing a crucial break to lead 4-3. From there, the 37-year-old controlled the pace, holding his serve to close out the match and advance to the next round.

Djokovic will now face another French player, Valentine Oyenina, currently ranked 73rd on the ATP tour. The winner of that encounter will meet the victor of the clash between Croatian Dino Prižmić and Brazilian João Fonseca in the third round.
