End of a Successful Loan Spell

Croatian international defender Duje Ćaleta-Car is set to return to Olympique Lyon following the conclusion of his one-year loan spell at Real Sociedad. The Basque club has officially confirmed they will not exercise the €4 million purchase option included in the loan agreement, marking the end of the Croatian centre-back’s stint in San Sebastian.

The decision comes after a highly successful campaign for the La Liga side, culminating in a Copa del Rey triumph. Real Sociedad secured their place in the trophy final with a victory over Espanyol in Barcelona last Saturday. The club released a statement on Monday praising the contribution of both Ćaleta-Car and Brazilian winger Wesley Gassama, who also departs the club as his contract expires on June 30.

A Key Figure in Basque Football

During his time in Spain, the 29-year-old became a staple in the starting lineup. He appeared in 32 matches for the club, netting one goal and helping Real Sociedad finish tenth in the domestic league table. More importantly, his defensive solidity was instrumental in their cup run, a feat that also secured their qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, who took charge in late December, had previously highlighted the Croatian’s importance to the squad. Speaking to the press nine days ago, Matarazzo expressed his satisfaction with Ćaleta-Car’s performances, noting that the defender was a vital component in key matches, including the cup final.

Focus Shifts to the World Cup

With his club duties in Spain now concluded, Ćaleta-Car’s immediate focus shifts to the national stage. He is expected to join the Croatia national football team as they begin their preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The defender has been a mainstay for the Vatreni in recent years, bringing experience to their defensive line.

Following the international tournament, he will resume his role at Olympique Lyon in France. The French club secured fourth place in Ligue 1 this season, setting the stage for a competitive campaign ahead. Ćaleta-Car, who previously played for Southampton, Marseille, Red Bull Salzburg, and Šibenik early in his career, adds significant depth to the Lyon squad upon his return.
