Historic Return to the Spanish Elite
The legendary Deportivo La Coruna has officially ended an eight-year exile from Spain's top flight. The Galician club secured their promotion to La Liga with a commanding 2:0 away victory over Real Valladolid. The match took place at the Jose Zorrilla Stadium during the penultimate 41st round of La Liga 2. With this triumph, the side managed by Antonio Hidalgo reached 77 points, putting them out of reach of second place and guaranteeing direct promotion.
La Coruna joins table leaders Racing Santander, who also secured their spot in the elite division for the upcoming season. The last time the former Spanish champions (2000) and Champions League semi-finalists played at this level was during the 2017/2018 campaign. Following that era, the club endured a severe period of financial crisis and administrative turmoil, which saw them relegated all the way to the third tier. Now, the faithful supporters have a reason to celebrate once again.
Nsongo's Brace Seals the Deal
The Cameroonian striker Bil Nsongo was the standout performer for the visitors in this historic evening. He opened the scoring in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a pass from Luismi Cruz. The same partnership struck again in the 33rd minute; Cruz provided the assist once more, and Nsongo doubled Deportivo's lead.
In the second half, the hosts from Valladolid attempted to change the course of the game, but their aggressive approach resulted only in a series of bookings. The inevitable occurred in the 85th minute when substitute Lucas Sanseverio received a straight red card for a rough foul. This left Valladolid with ten men, stripping them of any chance for late pressure.
Deportivo saw out the victory comfortably, finishing with 77 points in second place. Valladolid remains 16th with 46 points.
