The best female tennis player in Montenegrin history, Danka Kovinić, returned to the court two weeks ago at the Challenger in Istanbul, where she was eliminated early. She then tried her luck in the qualifiers for Roland Garros. However, in her first match, she was outplayed by Fiona Ferro from France, who won 2-0 (6-2, 6-3).

Kovinić hasn't been on the court for over a year and three months. In 2025, she played only three matches and dealt with a severe back injury. Now, at 31, she has returned to the sport.

Currently, Kovinić does not have a ranking on the WTA list, so she received a special invitation to compete in the second Grand Slam of the year. It was evident that she needed time to return to competitive form, as she was up against a player ranked 200th in the world.

Kovinić won a doubles title in Austria in 2015 and played three WTA finals in singles, including ones in Tianjin in 2015, Istanbul in 2016, and Charleston in 2021. Her struggles with injuries have persisted since 2022.

Danka, originally from Cetinje and now living in Herceg Novi, is hoping to make a comeback to the top of tennis. In 2016, she was ranked 46th in the world.
