Croatian tennis player Petra Marcinko (WTA - 76) secured a place in the final of the WTA tournament in Rabat, Morocco, after defeating Swiss player Jill Teichmann (WTA - 207) in the semifinals. Marcinko's victory was 7-6, 6-3. The 20-year-old Marcinko had already achieved a career milestone by reaching the quarterfinals, and now she will compete in her first WTA-level final.
This victory has boosted Marcinko to 56th place on the WTA live rankings, a 20-place jump from where she started the tournament. Today’s win also makes her the highest-ranked Croatian female tennis player, surpassing Antonia Ružić and Donna Vekić.
First WTA Title on the Horizon
Marcinko took an early lead in the match, leading 4-1 with a break advantage. However, Teichmann quickly equalized to 4-4. With no further breaks until the end of the set, the first set was decided in a tiebreak, which Marcinko won 7-2. In the second set, Marcinko and Teichmann exchanged breaks at the beginning. Marcinko then won four consecutive games, achieving a double break. At 5-1, Marcinko allowed Teichmann a match point, but she managed to win 5-3. Teichmann served for 4-5, but Marcinko broke for a 2-0 set victory.
This was their second meeting, with Marcinko having won in the qualifying rounds of the 2023 US Open. Marcinko will now compete for her first WTA title in the final against Ukrainian player Anhelina Kalinina, ranked 89th in the world. Kalinina has reached the final without losing a set.
