The British newspaper The Guardian recently released a prestigious list of the 27 best beach bars in Europe, and one Croatian location made the cut.
The coveted spot goes to the iconic Banova Villa on the island of Rab, as reported by Tportal. The bar was selected by renowned journalists for its authentic atmosphere and spectacular view of the old town.
As local coastlines increasingly face the challenges of mass tourism, international media continue to recognize the value of understated charm and natural beauty. In search of the perfect blend of cocktails and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe, from France to Greece, The Guardian’s journalist Meri Novakovik discovered and included Banova Villa on an exclusive list of must-visit spots for the summer.
Banova Villa is nestled on the small beach of Sveti Ivan, right by the sea and among the deep shade of Aleppo pines. The British list describes the bar as pleasantly unpretentious and intentionally rustic, giving it a unique character that sets it apart from the flood of generic, modern hospitality venues that dominate today’s coastlines.
Guests at Banova Villa enjoy a true “island” feel with rustic wooden furniture. What particularly impressed the journalist was the golden hour, the moment when the sun sets over the Renaissance architecture of the town, accompanied by a glass of Aperol spritz in hand, which she called “pure magic.”
Who are the main European competitors?
While Banova Villa is the sole Croatian representative, The Guardian’s list offers substantial inspiration for travel across the continent, demonstrating that luxury in 2026 increasingly relies on experience and authenticity rather than “expensive loungers.”
Also making the prestigious list is the French “Le Cabanon” on the Côte d’Azur, located near the famous house of architect Le Corbusier. Guests there enjoy the aroma of fresh figs with a spectacular view of the anchored super-yachts. On the other hand, fans of a different kind of history will be drawn to the Spanish “Restaurant La Isleta” in the southern region of Almería. This is the main attraction of a picturesque white fishing village that served as the backdrop for the cult film “Terminator” with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Italy is represented by “Il Pirata” in the coastal town of Termoli on the Adriatic coast. This family-run restaurant has become synonymous with the perfect Italian summer beach lunch, winning visitors over with superbly grilled cuttlefish paired with local Trebbiano wine.
For those seeking wildness and active holidays, The Guardian highlights the Portuguese “Cal Arrifana” in the Algarve region. This boho paradise attracts surfers and hikers on cascading terraces that literally “scream” at every sunset over the ocean.
Greece, meanwhile, is perfectly represented by “Bardis” in Loutro Bay, a charming local tavern where guests, while enjoying freshly caught fish, often can watch dolphins and sea eagles freely swimming nearby.
