Croatia's karate team has achieved remarkable success at the European Championships in Frankfurt, with three finalists and three bronze medalists in the individual categories. This is one of the best results for Croatia's karate representation at the European level.
Emma Sgardell's Golden Chance
Emma Sgardell (50 kg) has reached the final without losing a single point. She defeated athletes from Slovenia, Romania, Spain, and France. In the final, she will face Caneva from Bulgaria, aiming for her third European title in her career.
Sada Bećirović's Journey to Gold
Sada Bećirović (68 kg) is on the path to her first European medal, having won against athletes from Macedonia and Austria. She also outperformed the three-time world champion from Azerbaijan, Zaretska, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she defeated the current European runner-up, Nieto Mejias, from Spain. She will now face a French athlete, Sombe, in the final.
Mija Greta Zorko (61 kg) displayed extraordinary composure. After a Turkish protest in her match against Fatmom Yenen, the bout was replayed from one minute and 24 seconds before the end, but Zorko won again. In the semifinals, she outperformed the two-time European champion from Slovakia, Sučankova, and will now compete for gold against a Russian athlete, Basangova.
From the men's side, Ivan Terihaj (75 kg) has qualified for the bronze medal bout, having won against a Dutch athlete, Franken. He will face the current world runner-up from Ukraine, Zaplitni.
The Kvesić brothers have also qualified for the bronze medal bouts. Ivan Kvesić (under 84 kg) could not defend his title as he was stopped by a Greek rival, Mastrogiannis, the same athlete who eliminated him at the European Championship in Poreč. Anđelo Kvesić (over 84 kg), the two-time European champion, lost in the semifinals against a Turkish athlete, Aktaš. Anđelo has the chance to win his sixth individual medal at the European senior championships.
