Mens Triumph in Hungary
The Croatian men’s national volleyball team has claimed the inaugural trophy at the Mevza Nations Championship, wrapping up a dominant campaign in Hungary. After a surprising opening defeat against Cyprus, the squad regrouped to deliver decisive performances against Luxembourg and Austria before facing the hosts in the final.
The match against Hungary was largely a one-sided affair, with Croatia securing a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-23, 25-19). The hosts managed to stay closest in the second set, but Croatia’s attack proved too strong. Gabrijel Cvanciger, the European champion with Perugia, led the scoring charge with 13 points, anchoring the Croatian offense throughout the tournament.
Women Settle for Silver
The women’s national team competed in Maribor, where they enjoyed a strong run until the final. After securing three wins, Croatia faced Hungary in a grueling five-set battle for the gold medal. The hosts edged out the visitors 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 32-30, 12-15) in the decisive final set.
Despite the loss, Mika Grbavica confirmed her outstanding form, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with 28 points. Her performance highlighted the depth and talent within the Croatian women’s setup, even as they missed out on the top prize.
European League Ahead
Both national teams will now shift focus to the upcoming European League. The first tournament of the season is scheduled for the first weekend of June, taking place from June 5 to 7. Osijek will serve as the host city for both the men’s and women’s competitions, providing a home-court advantage as the squads aim to build on their recent momentum.
croatia men looked solid in that final tbh, cvanciger really carrying the load rn. women had a tough one with hungary though, grbavica did her best but they fell short...
