Xabi Alonso has been named as Chelsea's new manager, signing a four-year contract that begins on July 1. Alonso, who was out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid earlier this year, was Chelsea's top choice for the position.

"Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football," Alonso said. "It fills me with immense pride to become the manager of this great club. Our goal is to build a team capable of competing at the highest level and winning trophies."

Chelsea, currently ninth in the Premier League, sacked Liam Rosenior in April after just three months in charge. Alonso will take on a more authoritative role as manager rather than head coach, with a significant say in all aspects of the club.

Alonso's appointment comes shortly after Chelsea's 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, where interim boss Calum McFarlane was in charge. Alonso was also linked with Liverpool but Arne Slot is expected to remain in charge at Anfield.

Chelsea's ownership group views Alonso as one of the most respected young coaches in European football, with a calm leadership style and the ability to play in different formations. He will work closely with the club's sporting directors and ownership group on summer transfer business, aiming to add experienced players to the squad.
