Following the masterful match between Red Star and Cedevita Olimpija, which Red Star won, coach Zvezdan Mitrović of the Slovenian team declared that the game, particularly the officiating, represented a defeat for sport.

Red Star soon issued a statement claiming that they should have been awarded 50 free throws instead of the 35 they received.

It seemed that this would be the end of the controversy, allowing focus to shift to the semi-finals. However, the ABA League issued a statement, sending a letter to all teams in the regional competition about the quality of refereeing in the decisive match played at the "Aleksandar Nikolić" arena.

According to the analysis by the referee instructors, Croatian referee Luka Kardum received a below-average rating, leading to his sanctioning, as announced by the ABA League. However, this does not significantly benefit Cedevita Olimpija now.
