UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has praised Turkey's capacity to host major UEFA events, emphasizing the nation's passion for football and significant infrastructure developments. Since 2019, Istanbul has hosted three UEFA finals, a testament to Turkey's ability to successfully manage large-scale football events.
Ceferin stated in an interview with Anadolu Agency that Turkey is not merely a developing football nation, but a major one. "The difference lies in perception sometimes lagging behind reality. You see the numbers, clubs, fans, media interest, and the government and federation's commitment. But more importantly, you feel the genuine love for football. In Turkey, football isn't just important on match days; it's significant every day. This is your greatest strength and responsibility," he said.
When asked if Turkey was satisfied with hosting the 2019 UEFA Super Cup and 2023 UEFA Champions League final, Ceferin responded, "This is very clear; if we did not trust the federation and the city, we wouldn't return here repeatedly. The 2019 Super Cup, 2023 Champions League final, and now the 2026 Europa League final in Beşiktaş Park; all these events prove Turkey can successfully host major UEFA events. Of course, standards rise with each final. However, the overall outcome is positive. Istanbul is among Europe's top football cities, and returning here is always a pleasure."
TURKEY SECURES A SERIOUS ADVANTAGE
Ceferin highlighted Turkey's strong position in terms of stadium infrastructure, especially in co-hosting the 2032 UEFA European Football Championship with Italy. "This is not just a matter of courtesy. Many European countries have talked about new stadiums for 20 years without achieving anything. Turkey didn't just talk; it acted and built magnificent facilities. This makes a huge difference. Organizing a European Championship requires more than just stadiums, but without them, it's impossible. Your country has recognized this and gained a serious advantage over many European nations."
TURKEY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WAIT 24 YEARS
Ceferin noted that Turkey, motivated to prove its worth for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, should not have had to wait 24 years for such an opportunity. "A country like Turkey shouldn't have to wait 24 years to reach the World Cup. Now, the task is not just to participate but to behave like a team that belongs there, to be bold, and to compete. I expect you to be a team nobody wants to face."
Regarding his favorite Turkish National Team players, Ceferin said, "I usually avoid ranking players because tomorrow, many club presidents would complain that their player wasn't mentioned (laughs). But seriously, few teams can boast such a talented midfield as Turkey. Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız are extraordinary talents; the present and future of European football. Hakan Çalhanoğlu adds authority and experience to the team. However, I believe your true strength lies in the unity, intensity, and confidence among your players. When team spirit is high, individual stars shine brighter."
TURKISH CLUBS MUST NOT SETTLE FOR EMOTIONAL VICTORIES
Ceferin emphasized that Turkish clubs must not be content with emotional victories or a single big night, stressing that Galatasaray's return to the spotlight in Europe is a significant signal. "Galatasaray returning to the big spotlight in Europe is an important signal. It's crucial for clubs to return to the Champions League every year, not just for one big night."
