Alice Capsey's sparkling unbeaten half-century of 74 off 51 balls led England to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20 international at Derby. The win marks a strong start for England as they prepare for their home T20 World Cup in June.

Capsey's Impressive Performance

Capsey's innings featured seven fours and three sixes, showcasing her power and innovative batting skills. She shared a 43-run partnership for the third wicket with Heather Knight (19) and then an unbroken 64-run stand with Freya Kemp (31 not out off 20 balls) for the fourth wicket. This performance has solidified Capsey's position as a potential opener in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Bowling and Fielding Efforts

Left-arm spinner Linsey Smith (1-10) and off-spinner Charlie Dean (2-29) restricted New Zealand to 137-6. Lauren Bell's 2-23, including a wicket on the first ball of the match, also contributed to England's strong bowling performance. Danni Wyatt-Hodge's absence due to pregnancy provided an opportunity for Capsey to open, and she seized it with both hands.

England’s fielding was exemplary, with impressive catches by Maia Bouchier and Brooke Halliday. The tourists struggled to score after Sophie Devine's rollicking 45 off 22 balls, which included four powerful sixes. However, the absence of Suzie Bates, who has more T20 international runs (4,717) than any other player, was a significant factor in their downfall.

The series continues with a T20 at Canterbury on Saturday (2.30pm) and at Hove on Bank Holiday Monday (2.30pm).
